Cinco meses após ser esfaqueado em Nova York, enquanto participava de evento, Salman Rushdie já tem a data de lançamento de seu novo livro, Victory City: 7 de fevereiro.

O escritor britânico de origem indiana é ameaçado de morte desde 1989, quando lançou "Os Versos Satânicos", considerado uma blasfêmia por muitos muçulmanos. Após ficar ligado a respirador, Rushdie mostrou seus primeiros sinais de recuperação ainda em agosto, mês do atentado.

A nova obra de Salman Rushdie aborda a história de uma contadora de histórias e poetisa, que cria uma nova civilização através do poder da imaginação. Abençoada por uma deusa, ela vive quase 240 anos, tempo suficiente para testemunhar a ascensão e queda de seu império no sul da Índia, mas seu legado duradouro é um poema épico.

Em entrevista à revista alemã Stern, antes do atentado, Rushdie contou como, depois de muitos anos vivendo sob ameaça de morte, sua vida estava "voltando ao normal".

Depois de se estabelecer em Nova York, ele se tornou cidadão americano em 2016. Apesar das ameaças contínuas à sua vida, Rushdie era frequentemente visto em público antes do atentado e muitas vezes sem proteção perceptível.
